Recycle Your Corks

Hey, wine lovers!  Recycle your corks.

Next time you go to Whole Foods, bring your corks.....

Cork ReHarvest goes National!

In March 2010, Whole Foods® Market will announce its endorsement of a nationwide cork recycling program – Cork ReHarvest.  We wanted to share this news with you because we would like to spread the word – with your help – about our mission to save one the world’s most environmentally important regions, the Mediterranean cork forests.

This national effort with Whole Foods Market is a major accomplishment, noted Cork ReHarvest Director Patrick Spencer.

“We have also partnered with all Harrah’s Entertainment properties in Las Vegas and we have just been invited by bon appétit magazine to be part of ‘Vegas Uncork’d’,” he said.  “In addition to preserving a natural resource, we are helping the family farmers whose livelihoods depend on these forests.”

The national program with Whole Foods Market also includes Willamette Valley Vineyards (WVV), the Rainforest Alliance and Cork Supply USA.  Last year WVV and Whole Foods teamed up for the first time with a handful of other companies to launch a carbon footprint friendly Cork ReHarvest program throughout the Pacific Northwest region.  Eleven Whole Foods stores collected corks, which were eventually recycled into wine shippers.

The nonprofit organization Cork ReHarvest has led the cork recycling movement in the US and Canada, helping to collect and recycle some of the 13 billion natural corks that are produced each year.  Another important goal is Cork ReHarvest’s work to educate the public about the ecological importance of the Mediterranean cork forests.  You can find additional information on the program at www.corkreharvest.org.
